Apple Picking!

Wednesday, October 19, 2011 by RDT

We went apple picking on Saturday! There were plenty of attractions - petting zoo, pumpkin patch, ice cream, apple cider donuts, delicious roasted corn on the cob and grilled burgers, clam chowder - the works.

First we visited the animals. Marlee was comfortable with the small birds in cages - she thought the larger chicken looked "just like Chanticleer". But she worried the sheep and goats were going to eat her.

Hazel was a bit more daring.

After that, we had lunch and then traipsed out to the apple orchard for some yummy apples.

Even Hazel enjoyed gumming up an apple or two.

Cheers!

Is Chanticleer a stuffed animal? What a great name!

Since we live so far from apple country, I never knew apple picking was such a big deal compared to berry picking. Fun!

We checked out a children's illustrated version of Chaucer's story of Chanticleer (the rooster) and the Fox from the library. Marlee really got into it, despite the older-style English in the story.

Apple picking is definitely a tourist thing out here - all the city people come from miles around to the apple farms and get the "country" experience. Though it's probably a bit hyped-up, we love how delicious the apples are and look forward to making applesauce, apple butter, apple crisp, and apple-cinnamon oatmeal. Yum!
